Habitat for microorganisms

The Mutag BioChip™ is a carrier media for the attachment of microorganisms (biofilm). The bacteria will establish inside the fine pore system and will eat (metabolize) the biodegradable substances in the wastewater. It is well-known for many centuries that bacteria convert substances and this natural process is being used in the biological wastewater treatment.

Protective ring and buffer zone

The Mutag BioChip™ has a homogeneous outer ring serving as a buffer zone and protecting the pore structure from potential damage/abrasion/cuts.

Due to its low net weight, the kinetic energy is also that low so any mechanical wear is prevented.

Pore system and diffusion depth

The surface and pore structure is evenly distributed on a diameter of up to 30 mm and due to its openings it provides an optimal habitat for the microorganisms.

The pores of the Mutag BioChip™ are permanently filled with active biomass since substrate and/or oxygen can diffuse into the biofilms down to a depth of approx. 0.5 mm on both sides of the chips. This is made possible by the chip thickness of approx. 1.1 mm.

Thicker biofilms on the exterior surface are abraded by shear forces, meaning that the Mutag BioChip™ is self-cleaning.

High protected active surface area and biological removal performance

The Mutag BioChip™ has an extremely high protected active surface area of more than 5,500 m²/m³ which is fully available for the attachment of biomass and hence, for a high-efficient biological water and wastewater treatment.

However, the criterion of the biological removal capacity of carrier media in MBBR systems is the biggest possible quantity of active biomass which can be established on the carrier media. As a consequence, the high surface area of the Mutag BioChip™ can therefore hold a high amount of biomass.

With the usage of the Mutag BioChip™, you can benefit from the following savings and advantages:

  • best possible removal performance
  • simple operation
  • small footprint systems and low mixing requirements, low energy cost
  • easy upgrading or retrofitting of existing plants, low installations costs
  • low investment costs in case of building a new WWTP
  • high grade quality
  • long life material, no abrasion & wear

The Mutag BioChip™ is used in the following biological treatment processes...

  • Denitrification
  • Nitrification
  • COD removal
  • ANAMMOX process

and can be applied in ...

  • pulp & paper industry
  • municipal plants
  • coke & steel production
  • petro and oil industry
  • food and beverage industry
  • pharmaceutical & chemical industry
  • aquaculture / fish-farming (RAS)

   … and many more !
